The British Canoeing Awarding Body Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Instructor is a great first step for stand up paddleboarders looking to deliver safe and enjoyable taster/starter sessions based on their group’s needs and aspirations.
The qualification will support the SUP instructor with practical skills such as kitting up a group and getting afloat, initial familiarisation activities, games and activities and how to use mini journeys to support learning, inspire adventure and exploration. This will be enhanced with support on how these sessions can be delivered in a way that is enjoyable, safe and rewarding.
The Stand Up Paddleboard Instructor qualification is designed for instructors running SUP taster/starter sessions within the safety management systems of clubs, centres or other organisations in:
Very Sheltered Water environments
Stand Up Paddleboards deemed suitable for a first-time experience

Assessment Content +
- How to effectively prepare a group for an activity (e.g. kitting up and getting afloat);
- Together you will play with a range of activities to engage the group (e.g. games, tasks and journeys);
- You will explore a range of motivating activities and games that support learning;
- The tutors will support you to plan ways of using mini journeys to inspire adventure and exploration;
- You will develop ideas that allow you to help participants learn basic skills;
- Our tutors will share top tips and quick fixes for common challenges to accelerate learning;
- You will investigate how to select suitable equipment for participants;
You will explore methods of maintaining participants’ safety and develop your understanding of deployment matters. With plenty of scope for personalised coaching, we can help you reach your highest potential throughout the course.

OTHER INFORMATION
Experience level? +
To attend this course, you should:
- Be comfortable in and on the water
- Be able to swim or be happy to float
- Have personal SUP skills and some rescue skills (if unsure please contact us)
- Full National Association membership.
Age restrictions? +
The course is suitable for all ages above 14 years old. Any paddlers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Who is this course for? +
Anyone who is interested in introducing people to SUP. You may be part of an organised SUP club, a group of friends, a budding instructor, an adventurous family or you may be a solo paddler. This course is the first step on your professional career and fundamentally important as it helps paddlers lay down strong foundations for their development.

This is a professional instructor course with three specific assessment tasks that are completed during the course:

- Rescue Skills
- Personal Skills
Where? +
You’ll meet at our base near Solva to get kitted up (exact location will be shared in your confirmation of booking) and we’ll head to a nearby harbour which we’ve chosen to best suit the conditions on the day.
Kit Provided +
- If you have your own kit please bring it along with you
- The use of one of our fleet of high quality NRS Inflatable SUPs
- Touring paddling jacket
- Personnel PFD (floatation vest)
- Paddle
- Drybag
- Long John or full wetsuit
What to Bring +
In your confirmation of booking, you’ll receive a full list of basic items to bring on the day e.g. bathers to wear under the wetsuit, a water bottle, a towel, old shoes or wetsuit boots etc. Please bring food and water for the day.
