Inland Open Water Safety and Rescue


Learn the essential safety and rescue techniques to operate confidently in a moderate inland open water environment on the British Canoeing Inland Open Water Safety and Rescue course!

This 8-hour course is designed for all paddlers wanting to expand their safety practices in this environment, be it kayaking, canoeing, SUP or any other type of craft.

Through interactive, practical sessions, we will discuss equipment use and explore possible solutions to common issues. We’ll look at frameworks for evaluating risks, strategies for providing assistance as well as deep water rescues and self-rescues.

All modules are interactive, practical sessions, discussing and using equipment, and exploring possible solutions to common issues in an inland open water environment.

Experience level? +

To attend this course, you should:

  • Be comfortable in and on the water
  • Be able to swim or be happy to float
  • Have preferably paddled a SUP before, but it might also be your first time.
  • You can specialise in any craft, SUP, Canoe or Kayak or try mastering rescues in multiple craft.

Age restrictions? +

The course is suitable for all ages( if you have younger children drop us a message and we’ll see what we can sort out). All under 18 year olds need to be accompanied by an adult.

Who is this course for? +

Anyone looking to build their confidence and skill set on the water.

Outdoor professionals looking to increase their awareness and skill set. 

You may be part of an organised SUP/ kayak or canoe  club, a group of friends, an adventurous family or you may be a solo paddler. 

Qualifications gained? +

Attendance certificates are issued to candidates by their Delivery Centre, following a recommendation from the course tutor.

Where? +

You’ll meet at our base near Solva to get kitted up (exact location will be shared in your confirmation of booking) and we’ll head to a nearby harbour which we’ve chosen to best suit the conditions on the day. 

Kit Provided +

  • The use of one of our fleet of high quality NRS Inflatable SUPs
  • Touring paddling jacket
  • Personnel PFD (floatation vest)
  • Paddle
  • Leash
  • Drybag
  • Long John or full wetsuit

What to Bring +

In your confirmation of booking, you’ll receive a full list of basic items to bring on the day e.g. bathers to wear under the wetsuit, a water bottle, a towel, old shoes or wetsuit boots etc.
