This is a course for the Adventurous SUP paddlers out there. Perhaps the offshore Islands are calling or you want to develop your paddling skills in wind and waves. Perhaps you would wish to learn about the fast-flowing waters of our coastline and the more exposed stretches which require greater planning, decision making and seaperson-ship. This course is all about developing your technical and tactical skills to aid good decision making and planning in these exciting but challenging oceanic environments. Come and have an adventure.

Course Content +
This course is designed to give you a foundational introduction to Advanced SUP paddling on the sea, covering the following topics:
- Developing our board handling
- Proper paddling form
- How to launch and land your SUP through the surf and on rocky coastlines
- How to perform a range of rescues and simple incident management
- Simple navigation principles
- The basics of tidal planning in an Advanced tidal environment (more than 2 knots of current that might cause overfalls and tide races)
- Weather patterns
- Foundations of safety at sea
- Essential kit and equipment use
- Marine and environmental awareness
- Decision making on committing journeys around our amazing but challenging coastline.
- Techniques and Tactics to allow for open crossings to offshore islands
- Down wind traveling skills
Small group sizes mean we have the opportunity to tailor the course to the interests of the group. If you have any specific areas you wish to cover, you’ll have the opportunity to suggest these at the outset.
With plenty of scope for personalised coaching, we can help you reach your highest potential throughout the course.

Experience level? +
To attend this course, you should:
- Be comfortable in and on the water
- Be able to swim
- Have paddled a SUP extensively in some wind and choppy conditions.
- Preferably have some understanding of the tidal environment (if not please have a look at our navigation courses)

The course is suitable for all ages above 18 years old.
Who is the course for? +
Anyone looking to build their confidence and skill set on more challenging Advanced water in a beautiful coastal setting.
Perhaps you’re aiming to journey on a more committing stretch of coastline. Maybe you want to go out in some stronger winds. Maybe you want to use the strong tidal flows to assist your journey to visit offshore islands.
You’ll come away with the essential skills, confidence and decision making to plan your own trips including tidal planning and weather forecasting.
You may be part of an organised SUP club, a group of friends, an adventurous family or you may be a solo paddler.
Perhaps you’re aiming to buy your own SUP or already own one, maybe you want to learn the basics or maybe you are already a jedi but would like some local knowledge and support to allow you to journey around our amazing coastline with some of the worlds strongest tidal flows.
You may be part of an organised SUP club, a group of friends, an adventurous family or you may be a solo paddler.
Qualifications gained? +
This is a practical skills course with no assessments or qualifications. However, it can be tied in with BC Personal Performance Awards. It would be worth considering undertaking the BCAB Weather, Tides, Surf and Swell, Navigation for Paddlers and Open Crossings modules (please see our qualifications list)
Where? +
You’ll meet at our base near Solva to get kitted up (exact location will be shared in your confirmation of booking) and we’ll head to a nearby harbour which we’ve chosen to best suit the conditions on the day.
Kit Provided +
- The use of one of our fleet of high quality NRS Inflatable SUPs (if you prefer to use your own board and paddle that is fine).
- Touring paddling jacket
- Personnel PFD (floatation vest)
- Paddle
- Drybag
- Long John or Full wetsuit
What to Bring +
In your confirmation of booking, you’ll receive a full list of basic items to bring on the day e.g. bathers to wear under the wetsuit, a water bottle, a towel, old shoes or wetsuit boots etc. If we are out on the water all day please bring food and water for the day.
