BCAB SUP Coastal Leadership Award Training


This course is for anyone working towards gaining their BC SUP Coastal Leader Award. You may be an experienced, independent SUP paddler wanting to share your passion with others and be a dependable group leader at sea, or you may be an outdoor instructor looking to expand your range of qualifications. 

Here in the dynamic environment of the Pembrokeshire Coast, you’ll cover a diverse syllabus which will equip you with the skills and confidence to undergo the rigorous assessment required to earn your leadership award.  

Over the course of either 2, 3, or 4 days, depending on your needs, you will develop your group leadership skills, improvised rescue and navigation skills, as well as covering the theoretical based Weather, Tides, Surf and Swell and Navigation for Paddlers modules these can also be done as eLearning before the course via the BCAB website .

You will come away with a personalised action plan to ensure you are at the right level to return for your BCAB SUP Coastal Leader Award Assessment.

Experience level? +

This is a ‘direct entry’ course, meaning it is up to you to decide the appropriate level course at which to enter. We are more than happy to help you decide which level you’d be best suited to; please do get in touch. You do not need to show proof of previous achievement. 

You should already be sufficiently confident: 

  • Manoeuvring your SUP in a range of environments.
  • Rescuing a SUP and paddler (including self rescue)  in moderate conditions.
  • Paddling in winds of up to and including force 4 and/or tides up to 2 knots.
  • Dealing with situations responsively as they arise.
  • Planning trips with consideration for weather, currents, swell, tides and coastline

Age restrictions? +

The course is suitable for ages of 16 and above. If paddlers are under the age of 18 they must be accompanied by an adult.

Who is this course for? +

The BCAB SUP Coastal Leader qualification is appropriate for leading others on journeys on moderate sea. This includes a stretch of coastline with some areas where it is not easy to land but there will always be straightforward land points a maximum of two nautical miles apart, crossings not exceeding two nautical miles, up to 2 Knots of tide (but not involving tide race or overfalls). Wind strengths do not exceed Beaufort force 4. Launching and landing through surf (up to 1 metre, trough to crest height). This will also involve navigating in poor visibility and darkness.

This training course will help you prepare for the assessment but more importantly hopefully help you to become an inspirational SUP leader.

Qualifications gained? +

Where? +

If you choose to do the theoretical day of Weather, Tides, Surf and Swell and Navigation for Paddlers modules .We will inform you of the venue for the day.

Thereafter you’ll meet at our base near Solva to get kitted up for the practical training days (exact location will be shared in your confirmation of booking) and we’ll head to a nearby harbour which we’ve chosen to best suit the conditions on the day.

Kit Provided +

  • The use of one of our fleet of high quality NRS touring SUPs 
  • Touring paddling jacket
  • Personal Floatation Device (PFD) 
  • Paddle
  • Drybag
  • Long John wetsuit or full suit 

What to Bring +

In your confirmation of booking, you’ll receive a full list of basic items to bring on the day e.g. bathers to wear under the wetsuit, a water bottle, a towel etc.
